Oitenta episódios curtos, em oito capítulos, que terminam numa exclamação inspirada do Buda (udāna), em verso. Inclui a parábola dos cegos e do elefante e algumas das descrições mais diretas do Nibbāna no cânon.

Faz parte do Tipitaka ("três cestos"), o cânon páli do budismo Theravāda, transmitido oralmente e posto por escrito no Sri Lanka no século I a.C. O texto páli é o da edição Mahāsaṅgīti; as traduções são do SuttaCentral, dedicadas ao domínio público (CC0) pelos tradutores.
